“Since its purchase by Preservation South Carolina in June 2023, Taveau Church has seen $600,000 raised for its emergency stabilization. With that work completed, the organization is focusing on engaging the community to determine the church’s future use.
Taveau Church, built around 1835, is a significant historical site within the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. The church became a worship home for Black Methodists in 1847 and played a vital role in the community through the Reconstruction, Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras. However, by the early 1970s, its congregation had dwindled, leading to a merger with a nearby church in Cordesville.
On Oct. 19, a Cordesville Community Tour and Input session was held, where residents were given a tour and project update on potential uses for Taveau Church post-restoration. This session was facilitated by The Asiko Group.”
