In partnership with the Charleston Ports Authority and the Riley Center for Livable Communities and the project team including James Lima Planning and Design, Sasaki, and Nelson Byrd Woltz, Asiko provided strategic direction for community engagement, outreach and creative alignment for the community-led visioning process for the future of Union Pier, a 65-acre waterfront site in downtown Charleston that has been used for shipping, port operations, and a cruise terminal.

During the 10 month engagement process between June 2023 – March 2024, the project team participated in more than 200 meetings, engaged directly with more than 1,000 residents, and passively engaged with thousands of community members. In addition to the Union Pier Stakeholder Advisory Committee, which advised and safeguarded the planning process, we helped to develop and convene the Community Advisory Council, made up of diverse community representatives who bring a range of perspectives and lived experience and represented a group, community, or organization impacted by the development of Union Pier.
