The Charleston Peninsula: Our Community, Our Future, Our Plan is a City of Charleston-sponsored, community-driven master plan designed to guide the growth and evolution of the Charleston Peninsula. Creating trust and transparency for the Plan was communicated from the beginning with smaller groups to ensure the diverse representation of those who live, work, and socialize on the Peninsula. Information gathered on challenges, strengths, and opportunities also supported the development of the City of Charleston’s Comprehensive Integrated Water Plan, which is a foundational strategy to begin planning for adaptive transformation for safe, resilient growth, the protection of ecologically sensitive areas, and in response to future flood risks from tides, sea level rise, stormwater, storm surge, and groundwater.
During the 10 month planning process between September 2023 and June 2024, Asiko guided community outreach, marketing and communication strategies to ensure the City received feedback from current and past residents and business owners on the Peninsula and surrounding Charleston areas. We co-created a plan that included the community’s unique strengths, addressed challenges, and fostered a shared vision for the future of transportation and mobility, water, neighborhood design and economic development.
The engagement consisted of community open houses and stakeholder workshops reaching over 200 participants, waterfront land use planning community open houses, a waterfront tour with neighborhood leaders and key stakeholders, neighborhood listening sessions, a water and equity stakeholder workshop, and a public forum reaching over 150 participants.
